But there’s a lot of people getting in the way of their happiness, and the nasty side to a lot of their foes have begun to bubble to the surface.

A broken Ann Walker reaches breaking point ahead of the final episode (Picture: BBC)

What’s going to become of Ann Walker?

Poor Ann. She really is being flung about like a rag doll by anyone and everyone who knows her, and her mental health reached breaking point.

Dragged up to Scotland, she is clearly absolutely miserable, made worse by the incessant pushing from her sister’s husband to ‘entertain’ the idea of marrying the Sutherland nephew, even though he’s terrible with money and she doesn’t want to.

In a sense of belonging to her husband, Walker’s sister does nothing but make the situation worse, even through the guilt she feels about what it’s doing to Walker.

But with her mental health and her last lifeline – Lister – gone, she takes matters into her own hands, cutting her wrists.

Whether its a true suicide attempt or not remains to be seen, but Walker’s in a bad way, and we have a feeling there’s only one person able to fix her.

Rawson’s cruel behaviour is being brought to the boil (Picture: BBC)

How bad is Rawson going to get?

Rawson’s power hungry struggle against Lister met an intense level this episode as the pair finally aired out exactly what they thought of each other after tip-toeing around it for so long.

Going after Lister’s sister Marian in public was a low blow, but was effective in unsettling Lister long enough to have her bend to his will.

Desperate to one-up him, Lister has now entered a dangerous territory that could doom her family’s home of Shibden Hall in the process.

If that is the case, where are they going to live and what are they going to do?

She had only just promised Marian that their home was safe, and now she’s thrown it up for collateral.

Disappearing to France with little to no warning will not set her mind at ease either. We worry that she might be about to lose this battle.

Who is the mystery horseman? (Picture: BBC)

Who is the new groomsman?

And more importantly, why on Earth does Eugenie have such a huge problem with him? He seemed to make quite an impression with Marian, and even Anne seemed somewhat warm to him.

But for whatever reason, away from the screen, he and Eugenie are clashing in a major way, to the point the troubled made said dealing with him is like banging her head against a brick wall.

So why exactly has this man been introduced into a series with only one episode to go? And even more so, why is he being so cruel to Eugenie?

Are Susannah and Thomas going to get married?

You’ve got to hand it to Thomas Rawson – he really did make his world a better place by killing his father and letting the pigs eat him.

After showing entrepreneurial spirit, the 18-year-old has managed to bring his farm back from the brink of bankruptcy, and impressed Lister in the process.

So much so, in fact, that she helps him get Susannah’s hand in marriage from his father.

Is Mariana going to jeopardise Lister and Walker?

Lister’s ex Mariana is the prime example of a woman that has her cake and wants to eat it too.

Leaving her ex heartbroken by getting married to a man, Mariana still doesn’t mind the odd pillow session with her lesbian lover but nothing more.

That is, until she feels threatened, and all of a sudden she has thoughts on the whole things and wants to win Lister back.

Mariana is far from happy that not only has Lister moved on, but she’s also proposed to Ms. Walker – a claim she feels is rightfully hers.

Knowing she still has a hold over her ex-lover, if anything’s going to seriously derail the romance between the two Ann(e)’s, it’s going to be her.

Gentleman Jack continues next Sunday at 9pm on BBC One.

Gentleman Jack has shown to be the latest historical drama from the BBC to prove a hit with viewers.

Suranne Jones stars as the landowner Anne Lister, and it is based on the diaries of the real woman who lived during the early 19th century.

Sophie Rundle, Joe Armstrong and Amelia Bullmore also star in the drama.

The show first aired on HBO in the US earlier this year, and the series finale is set to be shown on BBC One on Sunday night.

How many episodes in Gentleman Jack series one?

The first series of Gentleman Jack consists of eight episodes.

Episode one of the series was first shown in the UK on Sunday 19 May, and it has been airing weekly on Sunday nights on BBC One.

Will there be a series two of Gentleman Jack?

A second season of the show was confirmed by the BBC in May after the first episode aired in the UK.

The first series starts in 1832 and follows Anne Lister as she leaves Paris and moves to Halifax in West Yorkshire.

Viewers also saw her start to develop a relationship with an heiress called Ann Walker.

It’s been one of the TV hits of 2019 – but the first series of Gentleman Jack is finally about to come to an end.

Yup, the story of Anne Lister – played brilliantly by Suranne Jones – has kept us captivated on Sunday nights in recent weeks, and has proven so popular that a second series has already been commissioned.

So just what’s going to happen in season two – and will the original cast be back?

Here’s what we know so far…

When is season two of Gentleman Jack set to air?

At the moment there’s no confirmed date for the second series of Gentleman Jack – but it’s unlikely to be on screens before 2020 at the earliest.

However we do know that the first season of the show has been the most successful new BBC drama of the year so far, pulling in around 5.1m viewers for its debut episode with a peak audience of 5.6m.

All of which has made commissioning a second series a bit of a no-brainer.

Suranne Jones told Deadline: ‘We always dreamed there would be more and now we get to play it all out. It’s such amazing and positive news.

‘I love working with the brilliant and talented Sophie Rundle and can’t wait to create some more Lister and Walker moments with her too.’

The second series will once again lift from the diaries of Anne Lister and focus on her relationship with Ann Walker (played in the show by Rundle).

The first series covered the period 1832-1834 – but Lister died in 1840, meaning there is another six years worth of her life to bring to the small screen.

Creator Sally Wainwright said she was ‘utterly delighted’ at getting a second series.

‘It’s so exciting that so many people have had such a positive response to Suranne’s exuberant performance as the brilliant, life-affirming Anne Lister and to Sophie’s beautiful performance as her courageous partner, Ann Walker.

‘I’m utterly delighted that we’ve been recommissioned, because there are so many more big, bold stories to tell about Anne Lister and Ann Walker.’

Who is in the cast of Gentleman Jack season two?

Aside from Jones and Rundle cast details for the second series have yet to be confirmed – so we’ll just have to hang in there for more information in the coming months.

When is Gentleman Jack on?

The series concludes on BBC One on Sunday night at 9pm.

What an ending! (Picture: HBO/BBC)

**Spoilers for Gentleman Jack season 1 below**

Gentleman Jack came to its emotional conclusion last night on BBC One and fans are already eager for season two to come out.

Luckily the Suranne Jones drama is returning or a second run and creator Sally Wainwright has revealed just how Anne Lister is going to navigate a lesbian marriage in the upcoming run.

The finale saw Anne and Ann Walker (Sophie Rundle) declare their love for each other and pledge to get married – but it’s certainly not going to be plain sailing.

‘They move into Shibden together in series two and it’s about how they negotiate their married life, conspicuously in public, and how they deal with their detractors and the effect that has on their relationship as well,’ Wainwright told Digital Spy.

The director said that the series is both ‘relevant’ and ‘sadly pertinent’.

‘I hoped it was relevant because we’re all much more articulate now about gender and sexuality, and the whole debate about identity,’ she added.

Ann and Anne (Picture: BBC/HBO)

‘I hoped it was relevant on that level, that now we can have a drama in which the lead is a gay woman, 9 o’clock mainstream, Sunday night drama in which the main characters are two gay women.

‘But becoming aware of those stories in the last few weeks, it is relevant and sadly pertinent that Anne Lister got beaten up at the end of episode five and that’s still happening now.’

Ahead of season two, the transcriber of Anne Lister’s diaries Anne Choma tweeted: ‘Hey #gentlemanjack fans we’re working hard on SEASON 2 – over 300,000 words of new diary transcription already completed!! @BBCOne.’

Check out the questions we want to be answered in season two.

Gentleman Jack season 1 is streaming on the BBC iPlayer.

The National Television Awards, one of TV’s biggest nights of the year, is coming around again in January 2020 and next year’s bash is promising to be their biggest yet.

The Awards show, which asks the British public to vote for their favourite and most loved TV stars and shows to win the top prizes, is entering its 25th year in 2020.

Comedian, author and Britain’s Got Talent judge David Walliams is on board as a brand new host for 2020, and he will be leading the celebrations for the NTA’s silver anniversary show.

David has taken over from veteran NTAs host Dermot O’Leary, who announced back in February 2019 that he had decided to step down after hosting the annual ceremony every January for ten years.

‘It’s been a tough decision because we have had a ball over the last decade, but 10 years feels about right,’ the X Factor presenter said in a heartfelt post.

After the announcement that David Walliams would be taking the reigns from Dermot, David commented: ‘I am thrilled to be the new host of the NTAs — and will ensure I also win them all.’

But who is up for an award next year and how can you vote to make sure your favourites go home with the coveted awards on the night?

NTA nominees 2020

Today (15th October) the nominees for the National Television Awards 2020 have been revealed and voting has officially opened.

There are 14 different categories for 2020, including a brand new ‘Challenge’ category in which hit shows such as The Circle and Race Across The World are long listed alongside the likes of favourites such as Love Island and The Great British Bake Off.

In the New Drama category, gripping BBC show The Capture is longlisted against the likes of Suranne Jones’ period drama Gentleman Jack, Chernobyl, Cleaning Up, Mrs Wilson, World On Fire and A Confession.

Dramas that weren’t new this year but still returned to our screens to surprise and delight us are longlisted in the Drama category, and these include Line of Duty, Peaky Blinders, Call The Midwife, Victoria and Vera, as well as the final season of Poldark. They will all be contending in the drama category with multi-award winning show Killing Eve, which stars Jodie Comer, who just bagged an Emmy for her performance in the show.

Competition is tight in the Comedy category too this year, as Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s multi-Emmy Award winning show Fleabag is up against Derry Girls and Ricky Gervais’s After Life amongst others.

In the Serial Drama Category, EastEnders and Coronation Street will both be vying to break Emmerdale’s three-year winning streak, while the TV Presenter category could see Ant & Dec take home the gong for the 19th year running. No biggie.

Netflix is turning Suranne Jones ITV crime drama Unforgiven into a movie with Sandra Bullock

Netflix has tapped Sandra Bullock to star in the feature-length adaption of ITV crime drama Unforgiven, which originally starred Suranne Jones.

The original drama followed Ruth Slater (Jones) who returns home to find her sister, years after she was jailed for killing two police officers.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the Gravity star will be taking over the role of Ruth in the new film, which is set to be written by The Usual Suspects scribe Christopher McQuarrie and produced by the brains behind the Oscar-winning Bohemian Rhapsody, along with Bullock herself.

Unforgiven heralds Bullock’s first work with Netflix since her role in the hit horror Bird Box, which smashed Netflix’s viewing records when it debuted last year.

An Unforgiven adaption has been doing the rounds in Hollywood for a good few years, before finally finding a home with the streaming giant.

The TV version is significant too, since it became the first of many popular collaborations between its star, Jones, and its original writer, Sally Wainwright.

Wainwright and Jones would continue to team up on the popular crime serial Scott and Bailey, as well as this year’s critically acclaimed period drama with a twist, Gentleman Jack.

Following on from the massive success of Bird Box, there will be a sequel coming out – sadly, movie fans will be disappointed as it’s instead a literary sequel to the original book the film was based on.

There’s no word yet if Netflix will be filming a sequel, but fingers crossed!

Doctor Foster star Suranne will also be gearing up to return to rural Yorkshire in the second season of Gentleman Jack, which creator Wainwright has promised that the next run of the show will be a ‘relevant and sadly pertinent’ look at LGBTQ relationships.

Metro.co.uk have contacted Suranne Jones’ rep for comment.

We could be waiting a long time for Doctor Foster series three (Picture: BBC)

The writer of Doctor Foster has given an update to fans on when they can expect a third series – and it’s not great news, sorry.

Suranne Jones stars as the titular character in the psychological drama – which also starred a pre-Killing Eve Jodie Comer – which aired its second series finale more than two years ago.

Now, creator Mike Bartlett has spoken out about hopes for a third series and crushed any hopes that it could be airing sometime soon.

‘It all depends on the story,’ he told Digital Spy. ‘Only when I have the right idea and story for it. The reason we could do two quite quickly, although it was still two years later, is I knew what it was.’

Image may be NSFW.

Suranne Jones in Doctor Foster series two
The second series ended over two years ago (Picture: BBC)

‘But I don’t yet know exactly… what I wonder is whether it needs a bit of time now,’ he continued. ‘I just think I’ll know, the right story at the right time. It could not come back. But we might come back in 60 years.’

Well, set your alarms for 60 years’ time everyone, and we’ll meet back here to discuss.

The second series of the show, of course, ended with Gemma’s (Jones) only son Tom running away from home as the constant fighting between his two parents proved to be too much for the teenager.

The initial plot of the series followed local GP Gemma as she discovered her seemingly loving husband (Bertie Carvel) was having an affair with a younger woman (Comer), the daughter of two close friends.

Lead star Jones had previously confirmed that there were ‘no plans’ for a third series of the show, even though her role won her the gong for best actress at that year’s NTAs.

It was also recently announced that Jones’s ITV crime drama Unforgiven is being turned into a film starring Sandra Bullock by Netflix.

Doctor Foster series one and two are now available to stream on BBC iPlayer.

First look at Save Me follow up Save Me Too as intense first picture of a bloodied Lennie James lands

Lennie James as Nelly in Save Me Too
Lennie James returns as absent father Nelly in Save Me Too (Picture: Sky)

Lennie James looks intense in the first picture from the second series of Save Me, called Save Me Too.

It comes after all six episodes of the series landed on Sky in February with Lennie playing distressed father Nelly who searches for his missing young daughter Jody, and Suranne as his ex, Claire.

In the first picture for the new series Nelly looks determined to carry on his harrowing search after the first series saw him fail to find Jody.

In his trademark yellow coat he glares from behind the wheel of the car, with the blood on his knuckles suggesting there is more danger ahead.

The official synopsis for the series reads: ‘In the next gripping chapter of his quest we re-join Nelly seventeen months later. Is he still looking for his daughter? What hope is there of finding her? And if new evidence were to emerge what would it force Nelly to do next?’

The drama was also created and written by Lennie, who previously told Metro.co.uk his plans for a follow up that could arrive in early 2020.

He said: ‘This was never supposed to stop after six episodes. When I was approached to write Save Me what I was asked was, “Do I have an idea for a returning TV series?” So it was never meant to end after six.

‘I can’t say very much about the second series without giving stuff away. But what I will say is I used the distance there will be between the first series and series two, because it’ll be over a year and a half between them being on the box, and I kind of use that time within my story.’

Meanwhile Suranne has said that she ‘wished’ for a role in a ‘gritty’ show, and that Save Me gave her everything she wanted ‘tenfold’.

Insisting that she doesn’t take any of the darkness home with her, she said to Radio Times: ‘When you get through the door and there’s a baby in the bath, work is work and home is home. I see my mates and bumble around, I know a lot of libraries and play parks in north London, and that’s more important to me.’

Chernobyl, a Sky HBO joint production, took ten years to make, Mr Davies said - Media giant Sky is to build huge new studios near the existing Elstree site outside London, creating 2,000 jobs. The 32-acre development will be used by Sky, other Comcast-owned firms including NBC Universal, and be open to third parties. Sky predicted up to ?3bn would be invested in new production at the site over the next five years. The UK's film and television production sector has performed strongly in recent years. Hit shows such as The Crown have been filmed using UK facilities as the battle between Netflix, Amazon and streaming services has heated up. Sky spends ?7bn annually on production in Europe, including football rights, and plans to double the amount it spends on making its own content to ?1bn per year by 2024. Sky Studios chief executive Gary Davey said the decision to build the studios was driven by customers' hunger for high quality original content. It was hard to keep up with the increasing demand for high quality content, Mr Davey said. It typically takes three years to bring a project to the screen, he said. He said recent successes such as Chernobyl, and HBO smash-hit Game of Thrones, had a high proportion of European actors, and showed US audiences were ready to embrace productions made overseas. Elstree already has access to UK production talent, he added. The UK has one of the leading film industries in the world. According to the British Film Institute (BFI), UK films grossed $9.4bn in 2018, a 23% share of the global box office take. The existing Elstree studios, which started to be built in 1925, were used by George Lucas when he filmed the original Star Wars trilogy. Those studios, in Borehamwood, Hertfordshire, are owned by Hertsmere Council. The new Sky studies will be located close by on land owned by Legal and General, which will fund the development and lease the studios back to Sky. Chernobyl was hailed by some as the best drama of any year ever, and high praise also came to A Confession, Cleaning Up, Gentleman Jack and surveillance thriller The Capture.

Comedy has been rated highly over the past 12 months with shows spearheaded by some of the biggest names in showbiz. Ricky Gervais’s After Life and Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s Fleabag will take on the triumphant second series of Derry Girls, the debut run of Sex Education and Mrs. Brown’s Boys.

BBC3’s records were broken thanks to Jesy Nelson: Odd One Out which saw the Little Mix star explore the impact of cyber-bullying on her mental health.

Now her soul-baring documentary has landed Jesy a nomination for the Factual award, where she is alongside the hard-hitting Ambulance, Friday-night favourite Gogglebox, the heartwarming Paul O’Grady: For the Love of Dogs and the camper van hijinks featured in Gordon, Gino, and Fred: Road Trip.

There were triumphant returns for the drama nominees including,  Line of Duty, Peaky Blinders, Call the Midwife, Killing Eve and Casualty.

In Drama Performance, Cillian Murphy (Peaky Blinders) and Idris Elba (Luther) take on the not-to-be-trifled-with Jodie Comer (Killing Eve) and Suranne Jones (Gentleman Jack) – plus there is competition from the relatively unsung Michael Stevenson who excelled as suicidal paramedic Iain Dean in Casualty.

David Walliams is also battling it out against pal Simon Cowell in the best TV judge category.

Will The Voice beat BGT? (Photographer: Ian West)

Not forgetting Sir Tom Jones (The Voice UK), will.i.am (The Voice UK and The Voice Kids) and RuPaul, who brought his Drag Race to UK shores, who will make sure that this is a keenly fought contest.

Katie McGlynn’s exit as Sinead Tinker on Coronation Street reduced the nation to tears. She, along with Danny Dyer (EastEnders), Danny Miller (Emmerdale) and Gregory Finnegan (Hollyoaks) are all in contention for Serial Drama Performance.

And finally who will take the crown for Best Talent Show? Dancing on Ice has skated into the public’s affections, but where will viewers rank it among TV favourites Britain’s Got Talent, The Voice UK and Strictly Come Dancing?

First look at Save Me Too’s intense trailer shows a bloodied Lennie James continuing search for daughter

The trailer for Save Me’s follow up Save Me Too has dropped and Lennie James hasn’t given up on looking for his daughter.

It comes after all six episodes of the series landed on Sky in February, with Lennie playing distressed father Nelly Rowe who searches for his missing young daughter Jody, and Suranne Jones starring as his ex, Claire.

In the teaser clip first shown exclusively on Metro.co.uk, Nelly is seen walking into his own surprise party where he receives his signature coat as a present.

In the same coat, he later glares from behind the wheel of the car, with the blood on his knuckles suggesting there is more danger ahead.

17 months have passed since Nelly found someone else’s child while searching for his own and Save Me Too is about what he does next.

New addition Lesley Manville joins Stephen Graham, Suranne Jones, Jason Flemyng, Susan Lynch and Adrian Edmondson who all return to the thriller.

Save Me was originally broadcast in February 2018 and fans have been impatiently waiting ever since.

The drama was also created and written by Lennie, who previously told Metro.co.uk his plans for a follow up that’s arriving in early 2020.

Save Me Too will be coming to Sky Atlantic and NOW TV on 1 April 2020.

Suranne Jones claims Coronation Street ‘used her’ for sexy photoshoots while on soap

Suranne Jones has said she felt ‘used’ on Coronation Street as she became a regular feature in lads mags during her time on the soap.

The actress played Karen McDonald from 2000-2004, causing trouble as part of the ‘Posh and Becks’ of Weatherfield alongside husband Steve McDonald, who she married twice.

In order to promote the show, the young actress basked in the upside of her newfound fame, but now looking back on it, Suranne admits that the fun soon went.

Speaking on the Give Me Strength podcast, she said: ‘At this time I’d only been on one holiday abroad to Spain with my mates. I was like, “Wow”.

‘Then I was on a celeb special for Stars In Their Eyes, then put in a magazine with a bra and knickers on. They’d give you a glass of champagne to get you a little loose.

‘I remember thinking it was fun at first, but I realised it wasn’t what I signed up to.’

However, she added that at the time, she felt like it was commonplace, and said: ‘I don’t think Coronation Street was alone in that. I think all of the soaps used their girls in that way.’

Since leaving the series, Suranne has made her name as a star of the stage as well as the screen, appearing in hit series including Doctor Foster, Gentleman Jack, and Save Me.

However, her heavy workload soon got on top of her, and she ended up collapsing on stage while performing in play, Frozen, in 2008.

Now, she’s encouraging others to put their own safety and wellbeing first, opening up about her own anxiety as she did so.

‘Take a rest when you need it,’ she told fans on the podcast. ‘Life isn’t going anywhere.’

Metro.co.uk has contacted Corrie bosses for further comment.

Back garden Bafta
The Bafta nominees didn’t miss the chance to get their finest gear on for the awards (Picture: PA)

The Baftas might be being held virtually this year, but that hasn’t stopped some of the nominees from donning their best red carpet outfits nonetheless.

They may not be walking the actual red carpet this year but Suranne Jones, Katie McGlynn, Samantha Morton and Glenda Jackson were among the stars who decided to get dressed up in honour of the occasion anyway.

The photos, shot by Rankin, see the nominees of the Virgin Media Bafta Television Awards dressed up to the nines… but posing in their back gardens instead.

While the shots may look – understandably – incredible, Rankin managed to put together the shoot virtually due to the coronavirus pandemic, instructing the actors to pose via video calls rather than in person.

Suranne Jones made the brave decision to wear a glowing white suit while sitting in her shed to read a newspaper – forgoing the heels for bare feet and a pair of wellies next to her in the shot.

Samantha Morton was photographed with her arms in front of her bandeau dress, with a beaded necklace topping off the look.

The awards will take place on a closed set with nominees and winners joining host Richard Ayoade via video calls.

Victoria Hamilton reprises her Doctor Foster role in new spin-off Life (Picture: BBC)

The BBC has released the first images from new Doctor Foster spin-off Life, featuring former stars of The Crown, Gavin and Stacey and Doctor Who.

Created and written by original Doctor Foster scribe Mike Bartlett, the new six-part series will follow Gemma Foster’s (Suranne Jones) neighbour Anna (Victoria Hamilton) as she strikes out on her own, living in a shared house in Manchester.

Joining Hamilton – who played The Queen Mother in the first two seasons of The Crown – will be Gavin and Stacey’s Pam Shipman herself, Alison Steadman, and former Doctor Who star Peter Davison.

A link between Doctor Foster and Life still exists too, in the form of Anna’s relationship with her husband Neil (Adam Jones), who will also pop up the serial.

A synopsis for Life reads: ‘Set in Manchester, Life follows the stories of the residents of a large house divided into four flats.

‘As each of the four stories unfold and intertwine in surprising ways, they tell a larger story about what happens when we step out of our personal space and take a closer look into other people’s lives.

‘Life explores love, loss, birth, death, the ordinary, the extraordinary and everything in between.’

What to watch on Netflix if you like Line of Duty - TO BE SET LIVE FIRST THING SUNDAY MORNING A Still from Doctor Foster
The original Doctor Foster followed its protagonist’s revenge on her cheating husband (Picture: BBC)

But how will Anna navigate her new life as she’s left her husband and name behind, instead calling herself Belle?

Making a new start of it as a Pilates instructor, Anna has to look after her wayward teenaged niece (Erin Kellyman), whilst Gail (Steadman) is about to celebrate her 70th birthday with her husband (Davison) before a chance encounter changes everything for her.

Colour us intruiged.

But if you’re hoping that Life’s debut could pave way for that mythical third series of Doctor Foster, we’d sadly like to pour some cold water on those conspiracy theories.

Following its titular character as she investigated her cheating husband, the series proved to be a breakout vehicle for Killing Eve star Jodie Comer as Gemma’s nemesis Kate, and the second series ended with the mysterious disappearance of Tom Foster (Tom Taylor).

But writer Bartlett has previously said that if a third series was to happen (and that’s a big, big if), some time would have to pass.

‘I just think I’ll know, the right story at the right time,’ he told Digital Spy. ‘It could not come back. But we might come back in 60 years.’

Well, at least we have something to tide us over until then, right?

Life comes to BBC One later this year.

Suranne Jones has been spotted filming Gentleman Jack in the snow, as production on series two steps up.

The actress was back in character as Anne Lister in period costume on location, as she put together new scenes for the BBC drama in Yorkshire.

Suranne, 42, stepped out in a black coat and a wide-brimmed hat, with the landscape of the Moors covered in snow for the scene.

The new pictures also show a stunt double appearing in place of pregnant star Sophie Rundle, who plays Ann Walker.

The long-awaited period drama is drawing closer, two years after the first series drew to an emotional close, and there are still plenty of unanswered questions for fans to ponder.

Gentleman Jack, from Last Tango in Halifax and Happy Valley creator Sally Wainwright, focuses on landowner Anne, who in the first series began a romance with another woman.

The drama, based on the true story of real-life diarist Anne Lister, is set in Yorkshire in the 1830s.

The series one finale stole our hearts, with the drama’s two heroines running off into the sunset together to be married. In the new episodes, the pair move in together at Shibden Hall and embark on a new life together.

The second chapter of Gentleman Jack was confirmed back in May 2020, with Suranne saying at the time: ‘I’m so thrilled that I will be joining Sally Wainwright on the second part of Anne’s journey. We always dreamed there would be more and now we get to play it all out.’

The show began filming new episodes in early November 2020. Speaking about being back on set, the show’s creator Sally Wainwright told the BBC: ‘I’m more thrilled than I’ve ever been about anything that we’re returning with a new series of Gentleman Jack.

‘We’ve had such an extraordinary response from so many viewers all over the world about the first series, and I can’t wait to show them what we’ve come up with this time.’

Gentleman Jack series two has yet to receive a release date.

Suranne Jones has revealed that her father passed away from coronavirus back in January.

Sharing an Instagram throwback snap of her parents on a beach in Cornwall, the Gentleman Jack star wished her late mother, who passed away over four years ago from dementia, a happy birthday when she also shared the tragic news about her father.

In the heartfelt caption, the 42-year-old said she was still ‘coming to terms’ with her father losing his battle to the virus but acknowledged that he had reunited with her mother.

Suranne wrote: ‘Happy birthday mum❤️ forever on a beach in Cornwall with dad❤️

‘Mum passed away 4 and a half years ago and my father sadly passed away this January after fighting Covid and the affect it had on his body.

‘We are still coming to terms with it all but I know they are together and today I want to celebrate them both. My thoughts are with those who have lost loved ones. Today and always. ❤️❤️🌹🌹’ she concluded.

Suranne has previously credited her father for encouraging her acting career.

Born Sarah Jones, her father even came up with the idea of her taking on her great-grandmother’s name Suranne because her birth name was already registered with the actors’ union Equity.

In an interview from 2019, she told The Guardian that she had a ‘happy’ childhood.

‘Friday nights, me and my brother got a Fry’s Peppermint Cream, picked a video from the video shop. My brother was older, very bright. He went to university,’ she said.

Suranne continued: ‘I wasn’t academically bright – maybe at first, when I was little, but it was lost. I started doing a drama workshop and got really into it, then I did a BTec in performing arts and started to work.

‘I left home at 16, toured [with regional musicals], did some theatre education in schools. I would get home for little moments, to drop in, get my clothes washed, then go again.’

Meanwhile, a month after her father sadly passed away, Suranne was seen filming for season two of the historical drama series Gentleman Jack.

Based on the true story of real-life diarist Anne Lister, the drama is set in Yorkshire in the 1830s.

Gentleman Jack series two has yet to receive a release date.

Suranne Jones is introduced as DCI Amy Silva in a brand new trailer for the BBC’s upcoming submarine thriller Vigil.

The Doctor Foster star, 41, plays a detective who leads an investigation into a conspiracy that threatens the very heart of Britain’s nuclear deterrent after there is a death on board a Trident nuclear submarine.

The series, from the makers of Line Of Duty and Bodyguard, sees the police in conflict with the Navy and the British security services after the mysterious disappearance of a Scottish fishing trawler and the death on-board the HMS Vigil.

Suranne can be seen in the trailer alongside Game of Thrones star Rose Leslie, 34, who plays DS Kirsten Longacre.

In the new promo, Suranne’s character Amy is asked: ‘How are you in confined spaces’ before she is seen on-board the submarine after being lowered into the vessel at sea by helicopter.

Investigating the scene, she says: ‘I think this is murder,’ to which one of the crew tells her: ‘If you are asking who is capable? Anybody.’

Rose’s character DS Longacrew can be then be heard saying : ‘This was a co-ordinated attack,’ as she is told: ‘Everybody knows it’s a cover-up.’

When Amy is told: ‘This is a staggering act of hostility,’ she declares: ‘But we’re not at war,’ to which she is told: ‘That is an illusion, we have always been at war.’

The trailer will premiere on BBC One after the England v Ukraine Euro 2020 quarter-final match on Saturday night.

The six-part series, which also stars Anjili Mohindra, Connor Swindells, Adam James, Gary Lewis, Stephen Dillane, Lolita Chakrabarti, Daniel Portman, Lorne MacFadyen and Lauren Lyle, was written and created by Bafta-nominated writer Tom Edge, with episodes by Ed Macdonald and Chandni Lakhani.

It was set and filmed in Scotland and was directed by Bafta-winner James Strong, and Isabelle Sieb.

Thriller fans were given a first look at Suranne in character when stills from the show were released in August last year.

Filming of the drama was halted due to the Covid-19 pandemic but it has now been confirmed Vigil will air later this year.

Suranne Jones has been on medication since the death of her father: ‘I wasn’t coping’

Suranne Jones has been on medication since the death of her father Chris in January.

The Doctor Foster actress confirmed in May that her dad had died four months earlier, after contracting Covid-19 and spending three months in the ICU.

After getting Covid herself, the actress ‘wasn’t coping again’, so accepted help with her mental health.

Speaking on Fearne Cotton’s Happy Place podcast, the 43-year-old actress explained she wasn’t sure if she should divulge the information, but decided that it was important to dispel the ‘taboo’.

Suranne said: ‘The pandemic hit, and my dad got sick. I got a call from my dad and he was grey and he couldn’t breathe and he said that he’d done a COVID test and it was positive.

‘So my work – Gentleman Jack – sent him a medic and the medic said he needed to go to hospital.

‘He was there for three months in ICU. He didn’t make it and then I got COVID myself at Christmas.

‘At that point I felt like I wasn’t coping again so I had to go on medication.’

The star added: ‘I think it’s important to say that I’m doing great and I’m still filming my job and professionally I’ve always been really strong and on point.

’But I’m on medication, and at some point I’ll need to get off that.’

Suranne had been on medication a year before the pandemic, after having a ‘really big breakdown’, but had come off her prescription because she ‘felt really good’.

The star had first been prescribed medication after she took on a huge workload following the death of her mother Jenny in 2016, and collapsed during a performance of the 2018 play Frozen, in which she played the mother of a child kidnapped and murdered by a paedophile, forcing her to pull out of four performances.

Suranne said: ‘My mum had been sick for many years, she had an aneurysm. She slowly got worse and she developed dementia and she was in a home. In 2016 I had my son, and by the end of 2016 I lost my mum.

‘What I did was go straight into work because I thought well, I’ll take a job because I want to show that I’m back in the game. So I took on a tough job – I don’t know to this day why I would choose a subject that was about a paedophile.

‘I had a very public breakdown on stage in front of the audience and there was a build up to it that I didn’t recognise.

‘I thought it’s OK, I’ve got this brilliant opportunity – Gentleman Jack – I’m going to do it because I think it will help me. It did to a certain point.’

Suranne threw herself into 14 hour work days, saying: ‘I’m trying to control stuff. I’m trying to control the inevitable. Because I haven’t yet grieved for my mother and I haven’t given myself any time.

‘So after the first Gentleman Jack I had a really big breakdown and I was offered medication, and I took it.

‘And I didn’t want to. Kicking and screaming I took it, but I was so far gone by that point, because I’d had the death of my mother and then I’d gone on to do two huge shows and my husband did not know how to help me.’

The former Coronation Street star previously shared that she has been in therapy in 2003, comparing the process to ‘going to the gym’ to keep her mental health in check.

Suranne is back on our screens this week on Channel 4 in the latest installment of Dominic Savage’s I Am… series, I Am Victoria, in which she plays a woman on the edge of a breakdown.

She will also be back on the BBC this year in Vigil, in which she plays a detective investigating a suspicious death on a submarine.

New thriller Vigil – starring Suranne Jones – will be surfacing very soon (Picture: BBC)

New BBC thriller Vigil, from the makers of Line of Duty and Bodyguard, will launch across consecutive nights this August bank holiday weekend, it has been revealed.

Episode one will premiere on BBC One and BBC iPlayer at 9pm on Sunday 29 August, with episode two at 9pm on Bank Holiday Monday, 30 August, before continuing weekly on BBC One each Sunday night.

The six-part drama has a star-packed cast led by Suranne Jones (Gentleman Jack), Rose Leslie (Game of Thrones), Martin Compston (Line of Duty), Shaun Evans (Endeavour) and Paterson Joseph (Peep Show).

The series covers the mysterious disappearance of a Scottish fishing trawler and a death onboard Trident nuclear submarine HMS Vigil, which brings the police into conflict with the Royal Navy and British security services.

As the UK’s nuclear deterrent must remain unbroken, with the submarine staying on patrol, Detective Chief Inspector Amy Silva (Jones) is forced to go aboard to begin an investigation, which is supported by her colleague DS Kirsten Longacre (Leslie).

New details tease a little more of the plot, with the death being written off as an accidental overdose, but Amy suspects foul play – and when the crew close ranks in the face of her questioning, a new threat overshadows her inquiry.
